All of these are within about 45 minutes' drive of the cabin, apart from the White Water Centre at just over an hour. Times are from the cabin door, with a margin for summer traffic. A sensible first day: Porthmadog for the railways (about 20 minutes), then Beddgelert and Sygun Copper Mine (30 to 35). Save Yr Wyddfa for a clear forecast, and leave early. The 60 space car park at Rhyd Ddu can be full by 8am, the Watkin Path car park by 7.30am.
The closest starts are on the Beddgelert side: Rhyd Ddu and the Snowdon Ranger, about 40 minutes' drive, and the Watkin Path at Nant Gwynant, also about 40. Pen-y-Pass (Pyg and Miners' Tracks) and Llanberis are about 45, and Pen-y-Pass parking must be pre-booked on JustPark in the main season.
Eryri path guides
Both lines leave Porthmadog Harbour station, about 20 minutes' drive. Visit Wales calls the Ffestiniog the world's oldest narrow gauge railway: 13½ miles up to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Welsh Highland runs 25 miles to Caernarfon via Beddgelert, and its Rhyd Ddu stop is at the foot of a Snowdon path.
Timetables and tickets
About 30 minutes' drive to Beddgelert, 35 to Sygun Copper Mine a mile on. The 1 mile Gelert's Grave walk follows the River Glaslyn to the hound's grave. It is a legend: an 18th century landlord built the mound to draw visitors. Sygun is a self guided tour of old copper workings, no booking needed.
Sygun Copper Mine
About 30 minutes' drive. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis designed and built this Italianate village on the coast between 1925 and 1975. Allow half a day for the painted buildings, the gardens and the coast, and it pairs easily with the railways at Porthmadog on the way back.

About 45 minutes' drive to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The site is a historic slate mine with adventures above and below ground: Titan zip lines fly over the quarry, Bounce Below strings giant nets through a cavern, and the Deep Mine Tour goes down into the workings. Pick 1 or 2 rather than all of them.
Zip World Llechwedd
About 40 minutes' drive to the Tanygrisiau base near Blaenau Ffestiniog, where the Xtreme trips meet. Go Below runs what Visit Wales calls personally guided expeditions in abandoned slate mines in Eryri (Snowdonia). The Challenge trip meets at Conwy Falls on the A5, just over an hour away.
Go Below trips
Just over an hour's drive to Frongoch near Bala, the furthest trip in this guide. The centre calls itself the UK's original white water rafting centre and runs on the dam-controlled River Tryweryn, so water levels hold up in summer when other rivers are low. Make it a full day, not an afternoon.
